Higher education policy and strategy

  • Landmark research on measuring productivity in higher education for the Asian Productivity Organisation
  • Charting formative new thinking on academic standards in higher education for the Australian Universities Quality Agency
  • Refining the allocation of national learning and teaching performance funds for the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
  • Trailled a generalizable approach to redesigning courses to boost academic productivity for the Australian Learning and Teaching Council

Academic leadership and work

  • National research to design options for the future doctorate, funded by the Australian Government Department of Education
  • Developed a widely used leadership capability framework for Australian higher education, funded by the Carrick Institute for Learning and Teaching in Higher Education
  • International technical advisor for a survey of the changing academic profession, funded in Australia by the LH Martin Institute for Tertiary Education Leadership and Management
  • Produced national evidence for the Australian Government on career pathways and teacher training of higher degree by research students

Learner aptitude, engagement and outcomes

  • International Project Director of OECD’s landmark Assessment of Higher Education Learning Outcomes (AHELO) Feasibility Study
  • Directed national project to distil innovative perspectives and approaches for enhancing the student experience for the Australian Government Department of Education
  • Directed development and implementation of the University Experience Survey for the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
  • Advised RAND and the Higher Education Funding Council for England on options for assessing learning gains
  • Initiated and directed the Australian Medical Assessment Collaboration, funded by the Australian Government Australian Government Office for Learning and Teaching
  • Initiated the Australasian Survey of Student Engagement (AUSSE), working with hundreds of tertiary institutions and stakeholders
  • Directed development of national VET quality indicators for the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations
  • Designed and implemented the Graduate Pathways Survey for Australian Government—the first ‘five-year-out’ study of graduate outcomes
  • Evaluated implementation of a national Student Aptitude Test for Tertiary Admission, with funding from the Australian Government
